Terry Abraham and the Penrith & District Red Squirrel Group
Outside of his work, Terry Abraham volunteers for the Penrith & District Red Squirrel Group. Most days, Terry will be out and about the Eden Valley and Ullswater area monitoring locations for red squirrels and topping up supplementary feeders for this beloved and iconic native animal of the UK.
Terry has been fortunate enough to befriend many of his “wee red scamps” and consequently has become rather paternal with his extended family and often sits in the woods for several hours keeping them company and making sure they’re safe and well.
The native red squirrel was widespread in Britain before grey squirrels arrived! Following the introduction of these grey invaders in 1876, red squirrels rapidly disappeared from many areas as they were pushed out by the insurgent greys.
Thankfully, red squirrels continue to reside in Cumbria and the Penrith & District Red
Squirrel Group (Registered Charity No. 1117418) work tirelessly at extending their existence here, using dedicated Red Squirrel Ranger contractors working across a vast area of approx. 650 square miles with help from members and volunteers.
About Terry Abraham - Multi-award winning filmmaker and photographer Terry Abraham can often be found in a tent atop the fells of Cumbria. His critically acclaimed ‘Life of a Mountain: Scafell Pike’ (2014), ‘Life of a Mountain: Blencathra’ (2016) and ‘Life of a Mountain: Helvellyn’ (2020) have been enjoyed by millions of viewers on the BBC and beyond.
More about Terry Abraham ...His love and passion for the fells is second to none and much like the late legendary author Alfred Wainwright, Terry has carved a career for himself sharing the joys of the Lake District through visual media to widespread critical acclaim.
Whilst appearing numerous times on TV and radio including BBC's Countryfile, Terry often shies away from the media preferring instead to spend his time alone outdoors but always forthcoming when sharing the beauty of Cumbria, representing local charities or being a campaigning voice on matters concerning our national parks.
After almost a decade, ‘Life of a Mountain: Helvellyn’ (2020) marks the close of Abraham’s labour of love documenting iconic Lakeland fells and within this collection of prints he hopes to inspire both newcomers and visitors alike to the beauty of Lakeland.
Renowned for capturing the authenticity, light and drama about the Lake District National Park through the seasons, Terry often publicly says, “At a given time, on a given day, in a certain season and if the weather is suitable; such scenes I seek to capture on film can be enjoyed by anyone if they make the effort. This is the real deal and for me is food for the soul.”
Consequently, several images here feature in Abraham’s documentaries and for the first time are available to all to take a small piece of the Lake District into their homes.
