Loving Slate - Southport, Liverpool/Cumbria
Born and brought up in Liverpool, Terry fell in love with the wonderful landscape of the Lake District as a teenager and has been a regular visitor ever since.
He now considers himself privileged to be able to split his time between Keswick and Southport, Merseyside. While walking the fells and valleys of the North Lakes, Terry developed a deep appreciation of outstanding beauty of Westmorland Slate with its rich texture and olive green hue. Having a keen interest in nature, he has also always derived immense joy from seeing birds and animals in their natural Lakeland environment. Being a talented and creative self taught craftsman, it was perhaps inevitable that Terry would combine his admiration of Westmorland Slate and his love of nature ...with incredible results!
Terry has developed a unique layering technique, an innovative and original approach which he combines with traditional methods of working with slate. Using this new technique he has designed and produced a range of beautiful birds and animals, each individually and lovingly handcrafted.
Terry sources his slate from Honister in the Borrowdale Valley, where the 450 million year old Westmorland slate has been mined since the early 1700s, recycling the “debris” left over from the production of roofing and flooring, into beautiful and individual pieces of art.
Terry says, ‘I love the natural beauty of slate in its original form and I hope my art stays true to this! Hence the name of my company, “Loving Slate’! I employ the ancient methods developed by generations of slate craftsmen and combine these with my own innovative layering technique. This enables me to design and handcraft slate, producing unique pieces of art with a surprising level of detail and intricacy.
